Mathias Nkuhi

Dr. Mathias S. Nkuhi is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Law at Moshi Co-operative University (MoCU), Tanzania, and currently serves as the Coordinator of the Internationalisation and Partnerships Office.

He is a legal scholar, researcher and consultant specialising in co-operative law and policy, with extensive experience at the intersection of law, sustainable development and co-operative development, particularly in relation to communities and vulnerable groups.

He holds a Ph.D. in Law from the University of Mysore, India, an LL.M. from the University of Dar es Salaam, an LL.B. from Mzumbe University, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law School of Tanzania.

He is a former Head of the Department of Law at MoCU and has worked extensively with national governments, regional bodies and international institutions, including the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) and the German Cooperative and Raiffeisen Confederation (DGRV), on co-operative development, legal and policy reform, research and capacity-building initiatives across various African countries.

He currently works with the Co-operative University of Kenya (CUK) in implementing the Producer Organisations (POs) Strengthening Project in Kenya and Tanzania, focusing on strengthening producer organisations and their value chains.

His work connects academic scholarship with policy development and practical co-operative systems, and he has contributed to national and international research projects, policy reform processes and co-operative development initiatives across Africa and beyond.

He has published in peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes and has presented research papers and delivered keynote addresses at international conferences across Africa, Europe and Asia on co-operative law and policy.

He is actively engaged in strengthening co-operative education through institutional partnerships, international collaboration and field-based extension models that connect universities, policymakers, practitioners and communities in advancing sustainable and inclusive co-operative development. He currently coordinates a network of more than 1,000 young co-operative scholars through the Young Scholars Initiative (YSI) of the US-based Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET).
